# App icon sizes for iOS and Android (2026)

Every app icon size for iOS, Android and Google Play: the single 1024 iOS icon, the full size table, Android densities, adaptive layers and the Play icon.

App icon sizes used to mean a folder of fifteen PNGs. Today an iOS app needs one 1024 × 1024 image, an Android app needs a launcher icon in five densities plus an adaptive icon, and Google Play wants its own 512 × 512 file. This guide lists every size, the format rules that get uploads rejected, and where each file goes.

The facts come from Apple's [Human Interface Guidelines](https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/app-icons), Apple's [asset catalog guide](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/configuring-your-app-icon), Android's [adaptive icon guide](https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/views/launch/icon_design_adaptive) and Google Play's [icon specifications](https://developer.android.com/distribute/google-play/resources/icon-design-specifications), checked in October 2026.

## The short version

- iOS and iPadOS: one 1024 × 1024 px square image. Xcode makes the smaller sizes.

- The App Store icon can't be transparent or carry an alpha channel.

- Keep the corners square. The system rounds them.

- Android launcher icon: 48 × 48 px at mdpi up to 192 × 192 px at xxxhdpi, in `mipmap` folders.

- Android adaptive icon: layers at 108 × 108 dp, logo inside the central 66 × 66 dp.

- Google Play store icon: 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG, up to 1024 KB.

## iOS app icon size

Since Xcode 14, the iOS app icon size you need is one image: 1024 × 1024 pixels. The Xcode 14 release notes added a Single Size option that resizes that one image for every target. New projects use it by default. Apple's asset catalog guide says iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and watchOS apps can generate every variation from a single 1024 × 1024 image. macOS still wants an asset for each size.

The same file is your App Store icon. In the asset catalog it sits in the iOS 1,024pt image well.

Apple's HIG lists one canvas size per platform:

PlatformCanvas (px)Shape after system maskingiOS, iPadOS, macOS1024 × 1024Rounded rectanglewatchOS1088 × 1088CirclevisionOS1024 × 1024CircletvOS800 × 480Rounded rectangle

Supported color spaces are sRGB, Gray Gamma 2.2 for grayscale, and Display P3 for wide color. Display P3 isn't supported on visionOS.

### Rules for the 1024 file

**Square corners.** iOS, iPadOS and macOS mask the icon to round the corners. Apple's HIG says pre-masked artwork hurts the system's highlight effects and makes edges look jagged.

**No transparency.** Uploads with a transparent App Store icon fail with error ITMS-90717, "Invalid App Store Icon". The check looks at the alpha channel itself, so a PNG that looks fully opaque but was saved with alpha can still fail. Flatten it onto a solid background before you export.

**PNG.** Apple's older HIG listed PNG, flattened, with no transparency. For raster layers in Icon Composer, the current HIG also prefers PNG because it's lossless.

**Centered content.** Masking trims the corners. Keep the main shape away from the edges.

### Dark, clear and tinted icons

On iOS, iPadOS and macOS, people can set Home Screen icons to default, dark, clear or tinted. If you don't design a variant, the system generates one.

You can add your own in the asset catalog. Pick Single Size, then add Dark and Tinted images in the Appearance menu. Give the dark icon a transparent background so the system background shows through. Give the tinted icon as a grayscale image. Only the default icon has to be opaque.

For layered icons with the current Liquid Glass effects, Apple points to Icon Composer, a design tool that ships with Xcode. You import foreground layers, set the background, preview the appearance variants and export the icon for Xcode.

## The old iOS icon size table

You only need this if you pick All Sizes in the asset catalog to hand-tune small sizes, or if an old project still lists every slot. These are the sizes from Apple's [2021 HIG](https://web.archive.org/web/20210520170352/https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/ios/icons-and-images/app-icon/), in pixels.

Home Screen points are 60 on iPhone, 76 on iPad and iPad mini, and 83.5 on iPad Pro. If you skip the small icons, iOS may shrink the main one for Spotlight, Settings and notifications.

## Android app icon size

Android has two separate icons. The launcher icon ships inside your app. The Play Store icon is uploaded to Play Console.

### Launcher icon densities

The base Android app icon size is 48 × 48 px at mdpi, the baseline density. Android's [density guide](https://developer.android.com/training/multiscreen/screendensities) uses that size as its example and scales it by a 3:4:6:8:12:16 ratio:

DensityApprox. dpiScaleLauncher icon (px)Adaptive layer, 108 dp (px)mdpi1601×48 × 48108 × 108hdpi2401.5×72 × 72162 × 162xhdpi3202×96 × 96216 × 216xxhdpi4803×144 × 144324 × 324xxxhdpi6404×192 × 192432 × 432

The guide also lists ldpi at 36 × 36. The last column is 108 dp multiplied by each scale factor, for when you export adaptive layers as bitmaps.

Put launcher icons in `mipmap` folders, not `drawable`. Android's guide gives two reasons. Some launchers draw the icon up to 25% larger than the device's density bucket calls for. And `mipmap` folders are kept in the APK even when you build density-specific APKs, so the launcher can pick a sharper file.

### Adaptive icons

An adaptive icon has a foreground layer and a background layer, plus an optional monochrome layer.

- Size every layer to 108 × 108 dp.

- The outer 18 dp on each side is reserved for the mask and for motion effects like parallax. That leaves a 72 × 72 dp visible area.

- The central 66 × 66 dp is the safe zone. No device maker's mask clips it.

- Make the logo at least 48 × 48 dp and no bigger than 66 × 66 dp.

- Save the definition at `res/mipmap-anydpi-v26/ic_launcher.xml`, using an `adaptive-icon` element.

The monochrome layer powers themed icons. Since Android 13 (API level 33), people can theme icons, and launchers tint the ones that include a monochrome layer. From Android 16 QPR 2, Android themes icons automatically for apps that don't provide one.

## Google Play icon size

The store icon is a separate upload. Google's specs:

SpecValueSize512 × 512 pxFormat32-bit PNGColor spacesRGBMax size1024 KBShapeFull squareCornersAdded by Google Play, radius 30% of sizeShadowAdded by Google Play

Don't round the corners or add a shadow yourself. The format allows alpha, but Google asks you to avoid transparency and use a brand background color. Play Console's [listing rules](https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9866151) also ban badges or text that suggest ranking, price or a Play category.

## Checklist before you upload

- iOS: one 1024 × 1024 PNG, square corners, no alpha channel.

- Optional dark variant with a transparent background, tinted variant in grayscale.

- Android: launcher icons from mdpi to xxxhdpi in `mipmap` folders.

- Adaptive icon layers at 108 dp, logo inside the 66 dp safe zone, monochrome layer for themed icons.

- Google Play: 512 × 512 PNG under 1024 KB, square, no shadow.

## Generate them all

Start from one 1024 × 1024 image and let [AppScreen's app icon generator](/tools/app-icon-generator) do the rest. It outputs an Xcode `AppIcon.appiconset` folder with its `Contents.json`, the Android mipmaps from mdpi to xxxhdpi, and the 512 × 512 Play Store icon. It's free and runs in your browser.
